MMPEI IN THE NEWS
U-M launches strategy to turn energy innovation into reality
President-elect Barack Obama has proposed putting a million American-made plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) getting 150 mpg on the road by 2015, but it's hard to know if that goal is attainable—or pie in the sky. University of Michigan's energy institute announces an innovative strategy to tell the difference between inspired and misguided, and what it takes to make a good idea become great policy. For an additional story from Mlive .....
Was on WJR's "Greening of the Great Lakes"
Gary S. Was, director of the institute, will be discussing energy issues on WJR's "Greening of the Great Lakes" radio show at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21. Was is slated to be interviewed about midway through the hour-long show, which can be heard at 760AM. Why it’s time for a ‘Green New Deal’
As the world faces economic turmoil, cleaner energy can create jobs and reignite global growth.
Certain green industries have job openings
Tens of thousands of layoffs in the Midwest have left a huge pool of job-seekers. In Ohio, wind turbine makers say they have jobs available that offer good pay and benefits. But they say they are having trouble finding skilled workers for that renewable energy industry. (NPR podcast)
Efficient, open rotor jet engine - revisited
For the airlines of the world cutting fuel consumption by 30 percent would be huge. It would mean a return to profitability. It would mean a return to the skies for many travelers as ticket prices dropped. It would mean a significant cut in greenhouse gas emissions. It may also be possible.
Troy partners propose new trash to energy plan
Every time a ton of trash disappears into a Michigan landfill, Bill Chynoweth and Jim Schuur feel a pang of regret. Because in that ton of trash is the energy eqivalent of half a ton or more of coal -- and that trash could be gasified in a virtually pollution-free system to produce energy and steam, and reduce the amount of land devoted to trash burial.
Drawing lines in the sea: Nations stake claims on Arctic Ocean riches
The year 2009 will see a rendezvous between science, politics and big business in the high Arctic. Though frenzied seabed mapping clarifies the geology, economic incentives cloud the discussion
EPA coal decision levels playing field for wind, solar
Building an alt-energy power plant is risky and expensive, but thanks to a new ruling by an Environmental Protection Agency panel, building a coal plant may become riskier and more expensive.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
Plant Feedstock Genomics for Bioenergy - Due 02/18/09
The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announce their interest in receiving applications for genomics-based research that will lead to the improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production of fuels such as ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically, applications are sought for fundamental research on plants that will improve biomass characteristics, biomass yield, or sustainability. This is funding opportunity DE-PS02-09ER09-03.
DTE Energy/U- M Clean Energy Prize deadline is Friday, November 21
