MMPEI IN THE NEWS

March 12 Energy Workshop

NASA OCO satellite crashes
The Orbiting Carbon Observatory, which was to be NASA’s first satellite dedicated to measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide, failed to reach orbit when it launched on Feb. 24. It crashed into the ocean near Antarctica. The University of Michigan’s and Phoenix Energy fellow, Anna Michalak was on the mission's team. She was to use the first year of data to create global maps of carbon concentrations in the atmosphere. Michalak's research focuses on pinpointing the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide on the planet to help predict future climate change. For an additional story ...

U-M energy research on rise
Collaborative energy-research partnerships will enable the University of Michigan to prosper while helping to diversify and revive the state's economy, according to Vice President for Research Stephen Forrest.

Finalists selected in U-M DTE Clean Energy Prize competition
Three teams have advanced to the finals of the Clean Energy Prize competition. Each of those teams will receive a share of a $100,000 prize pool March 20, when the final judging takes place. The first-place team will receive $65,000.

U-M gets a line on electric car's future
The Chevrolet Volt, the plug-in electric vehicle that General Motors Corp. hopes will revive its sagging fortunes, will get a jolt from the University of Michigan. For two additional stories visit here and here.

ENERGY NEWS

'Green' energy needs a big leap
Experts say scientific breakthroughs are the key to making renewable power sources cheap and easy to use.

$25 billion to promote electric cars is untouched
The future of the American auto industry is getting off to a slow start. The Energy Department has $25 billion to make loans to hasten the arrival of the next generation of automotive technology — electric-powered cars. But no money has been allocated so far, even though the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan program, established in 2007, has received applications from 75 companies, including start-ups as well as the three Detroit automakers.

Green energy details of economic stimulus package
A run down of what’s in this bill related to green energy initiatives.

Energy conservation
Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don't keep reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. But what can we do about it as individuals?

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Hydrogen (and Fuel Cell) Market Transformation - Due 03/31/09
This Request for Information (RFI) is seeking stakeholder and public input on potential early markets and deployment opportunities for hydrogen and fuel cells. The information collected will help guide the Program’s efforts to identify key early markets and related green domestic jobs, validate hydrogen and fuel cell system performance through data collection and communicate results, cultivate demand and accelerate market development, and reduce non-technical barriers that hinder market penetration. Funding opportunity number: DE-PS36-09GO39003-RFI.

Call for Papers for the 5th IEEE International Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference - Due date has been extended to 03/13/09
The 2009 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC09) will be held in Dearborn, Michigan from Sept 7 -11, 2009. This year the conference will feature the theme of sustainability: hybrid, plug-in, fuel cell and battery technology. UM - Dearborn and Phoenix Energy fellow Chris Mi is the general chair. The abstract/digest submission deadline for VPPC’09 has been extended to March 13, 2009. Accepted papers will be published in VPPC 2009 proceedings and will be included in IEEExplore and EI. Best papers from the conference are eligible to be considered for publication on IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology special issue on Vehicle Power and Propulsion

Visit http://www.vppc09.org/ and http://ewh.ieee.org/conf/vppc/cfp.pdf for additional details regarding submission of papers.

ENERGY FELLOWSHIP AND COURSE

Sustainable Energy Fellowship
A yearly rotating one week program on renewable energy with Professor Andy Hoffman in collaboration with faculty from Duke, ASU and Cornell. All applications are due by twelve midnight, April 3, 2009. U.S. citizens in their junior or senior year of an undergraduate degree or completing their 1st year of a Masters Degree may apply.

Sustainable & Fossil Energy: Options & Consequences (GeoSci 344)
This new Graham Scholars Program (GSP) course, which takes place from July 30 to August 19, 2009 at Camp Davis in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, will introduce students to concepts and environmental consequences of sustainable and fossil energy sources. Along with hands-on experiments using alternative energy systems at Camp Davis, the class includes travel throughout Wyoming and Idaho to investigate various power-generation facilities, such as a nuclear reactor, hydroelectric generation station, wind farm, solar farm, and gas and coal generators. Studies of the ecological consequences of various power options will take the class a uranium mine, coal mine, and natural gas field.
