MMPEI and U-M NEWS

Team Algal Scientific wins inaugural Clean Energy Prize
A plan to use algae to simultaneously treat wastewater and produce the raw materials for biofuels won the inaugural DTE/U-M Clean Energy Prize on March 20.

ENERGY NEWS

Obama: U.S. auto industry must lead on 'clean cars'
"I am absolutely committed to working with Congress and the auto companies to meet one goal: the United States of America will lead the world in building the next generation of clean cars," Obama said. He noted that many American-made car companies, including GM, have made significant advances in producing fuel-efficient cars.

Giving the power grid some backbone
The U.S. needs a high-voltage transmission system to deliver plentiful energy from wind and sunshine to power-hungry cities. At least one plan has emerged

The next generation of biofuels
Companies are poised to go commercial with gasoline substitutes made from grass, algae and the ultimate source: engineered microorganisms

Conflict on the green
Sustainable technology is on the minds of engineers, but cost often weighs even heavier.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Nuclear Energy University Programs - Due 04/15/09
This funding opportunity is for development of Nuclear Scientific Engineering (NSE) infrastructure capabilities at U.S. universities and colleges. Infrastructure is defined as equipment and instrumentation that supports NSE Research Development and education programs at U.S. universities and colleges. This is funding opportunity DE-FOA-0000040.

Transportation Electrification - Due 05/13/09
The Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory, is seeking applications for grants to establish development, demonstration, evaluation, and education projects to accelerate the market introduction and penetration of advanced electric drive vehicles. One of the electric drive technologies that will be emphasized in this project are Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). This is funding opportunity DE-FOA-0000028 and is part of the recovery act program.

Engineering Research Centers - Due 05/15/09
The goal of the National Science Foundation ERCs is to optimize academic engineering research and education to stimulate increased U.S. innovation in a global context. Academic researchers, small innovative firms and larger industrial organizations will work together to increase entrepreneurship and innovation. Awards: 2 - 4 awards, 3.25 million each, 13 million total. This is funding opportunity NSF 09-545.

Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation - Biosensing and Hydrocarbons from Biomass - Due 04/30/09
NSF is seeking proposals that aim to investigate emerging frontiers in the following two specific research areas: (1) BioSensing & BioActuation: Interface of Living and Engineered Systems (BSBA), and (2) Hydrocarbons from Biomass (HyBi). 11 (4-year awards) with anticipated funding 22 million in FY 2009. This is funding opportunity NSF 08-599.

Instrumentation for Materials Research - Due 06/29/09
The NSF Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Project (IMR-MIP) provides support for the design and construction of major instruments costing more than $4 million but less than $20 million. The program also supports the development of detailed conceptual and engineering design for new tools for materials preparation or characterization at major user facilities. Such instruments may include neutron beam lines, synchrotron beam lines, and high field magnets, as well as development of detectors and preparation environments necessary to support materials research. This is funding opportunity NSF 09-547.
