PHEVs – not just cars, but a complex system

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are powered by the marriage of a conventional internal combustion engine and a battery that can be charged by plugging into a standard outlet.

nrel phev schematicPHEVs show tremendous promise but they will have an impact on the electrical grid, the environment, consumers and businesses. Economics, consumer preferences and habits, regulations, safety and a myriad of other forces will make or break this new vehicle technology.

To twist a proverb, it takes a village to raise a PHEV – or any other monumental change that will free the country from the grip of fossil fuels.
