PHEVs – not just cars, but a complex system
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are powered by the marriage of a conventional internal combustion engine and a battery that can be charged by plugging into a standard outlet.
PHEVs show tremendous promise but they will have an impact on the electrical grid, the environment, consumers and businesses. Economics, consumer preferences and habits, regulations, safety and a myriad of other forces will make or break this new vehicle technology.
To twist a proverb, it takes a village to raise a PHEV – or any other monumental change that will free the country from the grip of fossil fuels.
