Jinsang Kim

Research

Jinsang Kim holds a M.S (1993) and a B.S. (1991) from Seoul National University, both in Fiber and Polymer Science. He earned his Ph.D. from MIT Materials Science and Engineering in 2001 under the supervision of Prof. Timothy Swager of chemistry. His postdoctoral training was at Caltech under the supervision of Prof.  David Tirrell in the department of Chemical Engineering.

He joined the University of Michigan as an assistant professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering in 2003.

Kim’s Smart Functional Polymer Lab (2 postdocs and 9 graduate students) at the UM explores functional polymeric materials and their nanostructural assembly to develop advanced polymeric objects. Kim group’s research has focused on the rational molecular design, chemical and/or biological synthesis, molecular assembly of functional polymers for biosensors, flexible solar cells, organic emitters, and negative index materials.

Current research includes self-signal amplifying molecular biosensors, flexible conjugated polymer photovoltaic cells with controlled nanostructure, and flexible conjugated polymer photovoltaic cells with controlled nanostructure.

Jinsang Kim is a MMPEI Faculty Fellow.
