Michael Thouless is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Materials Science & Engineering. 

Degrees: B.A. (1981), M.A. (1985), Engineering, University of Cambridge; M.S. (1982) Ph.D. (1984), Materials Science, University of California, Berkeley. 

Experience: Assistant Research Engineer, U.C. Berkeley (1984-1985); Assistant Research Engineer, UC Santa Barbara (1985-1988); Research Staff Member, IBM Research Division, Yorktown Heights (1988-1994). 

General Research Area: Mechanical properties of materials (103 publications).

Research Interests in Energy: Design methodology for light-weight automotive structures, with a particular interest in adhesive bonding; mechanics and stresses in thin-films and coatings; micro-mechanics for growth and fabrication of opto-electronic and thermo-electric materials.

Teaching Interests in Energy:  Materials selection, including aspects of design for energy.  

Michael Thouless is a MMPEI Faculty Fellow.
